ABOUT

Matt Mathews

Early Life:

Matt Mathews was born on January 13, 1993 in Birmingham, Alabama to Don and Renae Mathews. His parents separated when he was young and as a result, he moved around a lot until he ended up at McAdory high school where he graduated in 2011. From an early age, Matt knew he wanted to be an entertainer. Music was his first love and singing was something he did as a young child.  Not pursuing  anything in the entertainment world he knew it was best to play it safe and work a "real" job while in school. One of those  jobs was at a Walmart Portrait Studio when he was just 17. Though he had an interest in photography, he was never extremely passionate nor knew that it could lead to a potential career. Photography didn't seem like the safest route either so Matt did what most everyone else was doing and went to nursing school. Though his sights were set on a different career, Matt used all the money he got for high school graduation and spent it on a Canon Rebel Kit from Sam’s Club and learned how to take photographs! He had no formal training or any education as a photographer, he was just winging it when he bought that first camera.

Matt was accepted into the nursing program at Jefferson State Community College in 2013 where he studied hard and worked as a photographer on the side to pay the bills. He photographed weddings, families and honestly anything during those years. Working as a photographer and doing several other odd jobs paid the bills while he worked his way through nursing school. But while working so hard to support his dreams as a nursing student, he realized that his passion lay in photography, not in the healthcare industry. He decided to quit nursing school and pursue a career in photography.

Personal Life:

In 2014, Matt started dating Rob Killgore and a year later they together purchased their first home in May 2015. In this home, Matt created his first real studio and decided to take a leap in the professional photography industry. He built a boudoir studio in a 300 square foot bedroom and started exploring this sexy section of photography. Matt and Rob married in November of 2016 and Matt;s business continued to grow. While transitioning and figuring out the boudoir photography, Matt continued to photograph weddings and was working boudoir as a side hustle. During this transition, he realized that boudoir was what he was really passionate about and decided to quit booking weddings and focus on growing his boudoir business. This paid off and Matt began booking more and more boudoir sessions.

Matt says he was lucky that he bought that first camera after graduation and lucky that he found his passion instead of sticking to the rigid structure and goals of becoming a nurse. Today, with the help of his husband Rob, Matt is a successful boudoir photographer with years of experience and now a standup comedian traveling the world . When he is not working, Matt is often found barrel racing, carrying out his barn chores and hanging out with his favorite animals. Matt and Rob have four horses, one donkey, 35 chickens, six , two dogs, three cats and two pigs.

Matt's Career:

Once Matt quit nursing school and decided to direct his photography passion and talent towards boudoir, his professional life really took off. He began teaching boudoir photography workshops all across the country. He has taught everywhere from Atlanta to Seattle and started speaking at photography events and conferences for companies such as Canon.

In 2017, Matt leased his first official studio in Downtown Birmingham at the Wooster Lofts where his business continued to steadily grow and he moved to his first commercial space in 2018, only a year later. In 2019, he released his own memoir titled “Uncovered: The Naked Truth of Life, Love and Addiction” where he discussed his life growing up poor and how he did not let that stop him get to where he is today.

After two years in his beautiful studio, Matt knew it was time to upgrade once again. To accommodate his growing business and increase in clientele, Matt bought his first commercial building in 2023 moved into a brand new two story, 7,000 square foot space. The studio takes up the second floor space while the first floor is the Matt Mathews store.. Despite opening this new studio and Boutique in the middle of a pandemic, Matt found instant success. After the move and the Boutique opened, Matt found such success that he launched the Matt Mathews Signature Candle Collection which has exploded, exceeding all expectations Matt held for himself. He has since launched a skincare collection, clothing line and is now a comedian traveling the world on his first ever headlining comedy tour.

What is Boudoir Photography?

Boudoir is a photographic style that features intimate, sensual, romantic, and sometimes erotic images of its subjects often times in a bedroom environment. These photoshoots are often done with the subject in sexy lingerie or naked, but can be done in regards to your comfort level, whatever that may be.

Matt Matthews fell in love with boudoir photography because it is a life changing experience. It forces you to step out of your comfort zone and helps you realize how confident, beautiful and unique you are. Posing for an intimate photoshoot brings out inner confidence that you didn't even know you had while squashing all doubts you previously had about your body. No matter your age, race, size, or insecurities, boudoir photography is meant to make you feel beautiful and confident. Matt Matthews and his team are in love with this branch of photography because they love every part of it. The journey, the challenges, and the reward. They love their clients and they strive to change how each and every one of them changes their views of themselves for the better.

Boudoir photography is built to increase your confidence and self worth while providing you with something sexy and long-lasting
