Running any business is hard, it takes a certain kind of person and determination to successfully come up with a viable concept and then turn that into a concrete plan and reliable business plan. When I first began Matt Mathew Boudoir Studio, I definitely felt as if I was in over my head. When you first start a business, it is easy to get completely wrapped up in it and forget that anything else exists, to the point where you feel like you are drowning.
I started my business out of my house, I didn’t have any investors or mentors to guide me through the extremely difficult process process and as a result, I made a ton of mistakes. Some were small and nonconsequential, but some were big and significant. No matter what the mistake was, I learned from them and successfully grew my business with my new knowledge. In an effort to try to help you to avoid some of those mistakes, here are my top three tips on starting a boudoir studio that every new bus
1.
I always say that the most important thing to do when starting your business is to keep a very thorough calendar that has all important dates marked. When you are first starting your business, there is a lot going on. When you are so busy and quite frankly over your head, missing a deadline can be detrimental to the success of your boudoir studio.
I recommend putting every single little thing down on your calendar. Even things you do not think are important to note down, you should. Things like haircuts, a lunch date, a waxing appointment, things that you might think are unrelated to your business are important to note. Forgetting about any obligation can mess up your timing on other, more important projects that may hurt your business.
2.
My second important recommendation of running a boudoir studio is to keep a journal of all your goals. This is important for any business owner! If you lose sight of your goals it is easy to get lost in your journey. If you don’t have goals, then what are you striving for?
Most of us can think about abstract goals that we have for ourselves in the future but when thinking about your business, you need to turn those abstract goals into simple, straight forward, and concrete goals. Your journal should consist of goals both big and small. Easy, short term goals will make you feel satisfied when you meet them. Having smaller, stepping stones make reaching a bigger goal more obtainable and will keep you feeling accomplished and driven. Reaching smaller goals will not only help you feel on top of your tasks but also give you confidence to achieve the bigger goals you are striving for.
3.
When you are first starting your business, it is completely normal to become completely invested in it. Every single business founder has probably experienced feeling completely overwhelmed with their investment of time and energy into their business. I was definitely no exception. From my experience, spending every waking minute working, planning and thinking about your business will drive you to burn out. Your business is supposed to be something that you love. You are supposed to love watching it grow, working on it and spending time on it but with that being said, you still need to take time for yourself.
You still should make time to exercise, take a walk, get some fresh air, spend time with your family and friends. It doesn’t matter what you enjoy doing, but sometimes it is important to step away from your business to clear your head and give yourself some time to refresh and regain focus.
I think that all business owners and founders have experienced what I have with Matt Mathews Boudoir. Doing what you love is a privilege and will lead to success but the well-versed sentiment that if you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life, is just not true. We need to step away sometimes because even the things we love the most can burn us out and cause us to lose focus and vision on what is important.
